Introduction
The Basics of Google Analytics
Five tips for Google Analytics
Want to know more?

Introduction

Google Analytics is a fantastic tool that enables businesses to measure their websites traffic and conversions. It can produce some fascinating data that will support businesses in developing their digital strategy.

But, with so many different options and avenues to explore in Google Analytics, it’s sometimes difficult to find the important statistics. We’ve put together a guide on the basics of Google Analytics and some tips for getting the most out of the tool.

Basics of Google Analytics

Real-time
Real-time allows you to see who is on your website at that particular moment in time. You’re able to see which page they’re on, how long they’ve been on the page, how they got to the page and where they are located (across the world).

Audience
Audience reports on the characteristics of your users, such as where they are, whether they are new or returning and which browser / device they were using. There’s also a visual representation of the customers journey through the site.

Traffic Sources
Traffic sources shows how the customer got to your website and whether or not it was via Search, Referral, Direct or Campaign. You can also look at social traffic and AdWords Campaigns.

Content
Content shows you information on your sites content, including page views, exit pages, site speed and site search. You can see information on specific pages, such as the amount of views, average time spent on the page and the bounce rate.

Conversions
Conversions track the Goals you have set for your site. You can view the different goals and their success rate and also track its value. You can also track the shop element of your Ecommerce site and detail product and sales performance, transactions and time to purchase.

Tips

Not sure if you need a mobile site?
Go to Audience < Mobile < Overview. If more than 20% of your sites visitors are using a mobile device, you should consider the benefits of a mobile website.

What is your visitor journey telling you?
Go to Audience < Visitors Flow. From here, you can see the journey each visitor took through your website. Do you have a high drop off rate? Is this because they’ve found the information they require and left, or is it because you didn’t clearly sign post them to the next part of the journey i.e. your contact us page.

Want to know the pages views of a specific page?
Go to Content < Site Content < All Pages. You can then search for a specific page and view its page views (+ unique), the average time spent on the page, bounce rate and exit rate.

Track your conversions (using goals)
Every page on your website should have goal; an action that you want the user to take. It might be filling in a contact form, clicking through to a specific page or link or downloading a PDF. You should consider what action you want to achieve from each page and then set the Goals up in your analytics. Please click here to see how to set up Goals in Google Analytics.

Set up recurring reports

You can report on different segments of your site by simply going into the required segment (i.e. Audience < Overview), click “Email”, set the “To” email address to the email address you want to receive the report, change the subject (if applicable), amend the format of the Attachment (if applicable) and amend the frequency as required.

Alternatively, you can create a custom dashboard that reports on multiple segments. To learn about customising dashboards please see the following article .

Want to know more?

We’re currently offering free Benchmark Audits, where we –

Review the analytics on your site as is

Analyse exactly how you interact with your customers and stakeholders in person and online to understand their needs and drivers

Research how your target market searches for and buys online

Check what your competitors are up to

Review the suitability of your website for a satisfying user journey or shopping

experience

Think about how you can drive traffic volume to your site

Plan for continuous updating and improvement based on analysed results

Make intelligent use of customer behaviour data against an understanding of what the organisation and its stakeholders want to achieve.

All we need is an hour of your time (preferably face to face, but a phone call will do) and access to your Google Analytics account.

Interested? Simply fill out the below form and we’ll respond by the next working day.

And does it really matter?

Klout is a company, who compiles your social media data to determine how influential you social media updates are. By compiling this data, they are able to give you a “Klout score”, which is marked out of 100. You are able to measure the influence for several different social media profiles, including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Google +.

Methodology
The methodology focuses on the quantity of users who might see your update.

The score is determined by -

Twitter - retweets and mentions

LinkedIn – comments & likes

Facebook - comments, wall-posts, likes

Google - comments, reshares, +1

Is it accurate?

It is accurate in the sense that it can measure the outreach of your update by simply adding the number of your followers/friends/connections to the number of followers/friends/connections of anyone who retweets/shares your update.

Klout does not measure any outcomes (such a click through, contact form submissions) so you cannot see (without the use of Google Analytics) how successful the post has actually been and whether it has generated a positive action.

Also, it doesn’t take into account the quality of the outreach. For instance, we have over 600 followers on Twitter, 40% of those followers might be not be active, 10% might be on holiday and 20% might have no need for our services.

And you are unable to measure the outreach across multiple accounts, so instead of seeing the five LinkedIn accounts (with over a 1200 combined connections) we post to, I can only see one the outreach of one.

Conclusion

To answer the title of this article, I do not believe a high Klout score equates to a great social media strategy. So therefore, whilst you should be aware of Klout (and check in on it every now again) it is not the end of the world if your score is not 100/100.

Social media success can be measured, just not effectively by any one tool. The majority tools do not take into consideration the quality of your engagement, just the quantity.

Similar to our Search Engine Optimisation strategies, a successful Social Media strategy is one that encourages positive actions from updates and focuses on generating qualified leads. Not increasing its outreach to 100s of users who frankly have no need for your product or services.

“Create a website for your business in minutes” “Create your website in 3 easy steps” “Pay just £9.99 a month for a fully functional website”.

Whether you are watching the telly, checking your inbox or listening to the radio, there are adverts everywhere about cheap DIY websites.

The phrases at the top of the page indicate that your website will be fast and cheap to create, but they do not mention anything about return on investment or delivering actual results for your business.

We have compiled a list of what makes a website successful; it is a little more complex than “three simple steps” -

Clear and concise objectives for your website with the ability to monitor these objectives using analytics.

A practical, professional design, with seamless navigation allowing visitors to find the information they need quickly

“Call to action” Allowing customers to contact you quickly with contact forms and a visible phone number on every page

Search Engine Optimisation to ensure your site is easy to find.

Good content to get the right reaction out of the customer

The ability to update your website yourself, keeping your content fresh and up to date.

Secure hosting environment, to ensure your website is safe and loads quickly

A Support team of experts who are just a phone call away should you ever need help

Other Digital Marketing Services that can work with your website to enhance your customers experience

We pride ourselves on our ability to provide our clients with return on investment and create websites that work hard to deliver the results you deserve. We might not be able to compete when it comes to prices with DIY websites, but we more than make up for it with our knowledge and experience when it comes to creating successful websites.

Phew Internet is pleased to announce that we have been awarded ISO: 9001:2008 certification from Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA).

The ISO 9001:2008 certification is awarded to organisations that have processes and procedures in place which ensure that quality is met in all aspects of their services. We know that this reflects the care we take with all our clients, our attention to
detail and the high level of service we deliver.

Phew has always had a culture of continuous improvement, and since our formation in 2001 we have always had robust business systems in place. The decision was taken to move us to the next level and ISO 9001 was the correct device to enable us to do this.

Matthew, Our Managing Director has commented “The investment in this award just backs up the care we take to make sure we look after clients as we would want to be looked after and our focus to keep improving and delivering the best services for our clients”

We also have to give thanks to Blackmores who helped us to implement the 9001 standard.

If you would like to know how this quality standard helps us deliver results for clients please get in touch.

Social media is a form of digital marketing, which allows organisations to interact online with existing and potential stakeholders.

Due to the success of social media for many businesses, there are various social media management tools available. It is often hard to tell which one will fulfil your needs and make managing your social media accounts as hassle free and productive as possible.

We have been comparing two different tools over the past few months, to be able to effectively support our clients.

Hootsuite

http://hootsuite.com/

Hootsuite is a Social Media dashboard tool, which allows you to integrate various social networks including, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Foursquare, Mixi, Myspace, Ping f.m and WordPress. Hootsuite is a web-based application.

Hootsuite has over 300 million users and has won several awards including “Best Twitter app”.

http://www.tweetdeck.com/

Like Hootsuite, Tweetdeck is a Social Media dashboard tool, which allows you to integrate various social networks. Tweetdeck is software programme that you can download to your PC.

Tweetdeck is currently the most popular Twitter application and is compatible with several operating.

You can’t view full profiles

Only shows twitter stream

Conclusion

Whilst I prefer using Tweetdeck from a user ability perspective, I feel the functionality offered by Hootsuite is better.

Having the ability to load Tweetdeck (without having to remember log in details) is appealing, as is having all the columns lined up neatly and the ability to see everything I need.

However, having the ability to post to several LinkedIn and Twitter accounts (meaning I can manage all social media accounts more effectively) is more appealing as it allows me to increase exposure and ultimately save time. I’ve also found the app for Hootsuite more attractive to use, with a cleaner format.

Other tools available – CoTweet, Seesmic, MarketMe Suite

The Client:

The Faculty of Occupational Medicine is a faculty of the Royal College of Physicians. However, it has run as an independent charity since 1978, whilst retaining ties with the College.

Its main purpose is to promote healthy working lives through:

Maximising people’s opportunities to benefit from healthy and rewarding work while not putting themselves or others at unreasonable risk

Eliminating preventable injury and illness caused or aggravated by work

Working towards access for everyone to advice from a competent occupational physician as part of comprehensive occupational health and safety services.

The Brief:

To redesign the website, ensuring compliance with the latest best practices and to improve the user experience, making the website a highly effective tool for the Faculty to communicate to all relevant stakeholders.

To design a clean looking new website, with a unified, contemporary look and feel, which reflects the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, brand.

Content Management System (CMS) to enable Faculty of Occupational Medicine to maintain the site with ease and enable non-technical members of staff to manage parts of the site.

A member’s only area, which can be integrated with FOMs current CRM

Phew’s Solution:

Phew have delivered a brand new website for FOM, using their brief to create a contemporary, easy to navigate, simple to update and fully functional website.

The site needed to build with a simple and flexible CMS. The CMS Phew used allowed FOM to have a level of control over the sites content, allowing them to make changes to text, images, menu structures, events, documents and sidebars. We provided FOM with full training on the CMS, allowing them to make the most out of their website.

The site was design is based heavily on the FOM brand, incorporating the logo colours with the need to look fresh and contemporary. The site is not content heavy and focuses on text rather than images.

Phew took into consideration the need for a dynamic visitor flow and created a simple, yet effective navigation system, using side menus to go further into the pages.

The members only area has been integrated with FOMs CRM, allowing for synchronisation between both systems. Once a member is added to the CRM, their login details are automatically generated for them to use on the FOM website.

There is also the ability to restrict users access (based on their user settings). Should a user wish to update their details (via the website) this will automatically update their profile on the CRM.

The site also contains lots of user functionality, which is detailed below in the Key Features.

We are proud of the solution we have provided for FOM, we have met their digital marketing objectives and since set live, their website has received lots of positive feedback.

Key Features:

Built with a user friendly CMS, allowing FOM to complete easy updates

Contemporary, Brand based design

Document Management System

Member Login System

TSG Portal integration

Accessibility Tools

Print this Page feature

Social Media Integration

News System

Google Analytics

Nicky Coates, Chief Executive, comments, “We selected Phew to build the new website because they offered a reasonable price and we thought, from meeting them, that they would be good to work with.

This turned out to be the case. They created the new site according to our spec, and to the agreed price, but, equally as important, they were always helpful and understanding when there were hitches – for instance, when we wanted to make changes, or when we did not meet copy deadlines promptly. We are a small organisation with no in-house IT department and so it was vital that our web developers were able to communicate with ‘non-teckies’ and without jargon – and they could; we found communication with staff very easy.

We felt we could trust their approach to pricing – as there have been a couple of occasions when we have discussed additional jobs with them, when they have advised that the expensive option, or their own option, was not necessarily best for us. Also, we have felt, both during the development process and now the website is running, that we can ask questions and that they will be responsive. We would happily use Phew again or recommend them to others.”

QR codes are similar to barcodes, although they have the capability to hold and share more data.

The design of the QR code has developed quite rapidly over the past two years, as popularity has grown. Initially QR codes started as standard black squares; however, there is now the option to have them with various colours and styles. This was a major turning point in QR codes, as companies were able to start branding them.

The main benefit of a QR is the effective and quick response it gives the user and their mass sharing ability. They are also a very useful tool when trying to implement “Call to action” with marketing campaigns.

What could you link using a QR code?

Your social media accounts

Your email or website

Products or Services on your website

Special offers

Customer feedback forms

Downloads

Directions to your business

How could you use a QR code?

On your business cards

Print them onto brochures and other marketing materials

On product labels

Name badges

Advertisements in magazines or newspapers

Our recommend QR reader is Microsoft tag, it’s free to download and works on most SmartPhone devices. http://tag.microsoft.com/download.aspx
